Imagine the sentiments of Adam immediately after his fall from grace: imagine the emptiness of his soul, the misplaced emotions, the agonizing thoughts, and the longing for a renewed relationship with the Father, and what you get is Bebo Norman’s self titled album: Bebo Norman. Reaching into a place where only the broken can relate, Bebo screams the heartfelt pleas of Pull Me Out,” as though he were in a pit and knew not whether to let go or hold on, he inquires of God “Can You reach down here and Pull Me Out?” When you’re in a place of brokenness, and you’ve prayed just about every prayer possible, Here It From Me” reminds us that even though it’s all been said before, say it again, because we know God wants to hear it from us. A truth learned in a place of brokenness, are the sentiments Bebo reveals in: Not Living In The In-Between - “I can’t be anything I’m not. You get what you see. I’m going to give you everything I got, because I’m not living in the in-between.”

Just when I thought the lyrics couldn’t get anymore touching or heartfelt, “Britney” is the song which really humbled me. It speaks to every woman who has ever experienced betrayal: “Britney I’m sorry for the lies we’ve told. We took you into our arms and left you cold. Britney I’m sorry for this cruel, cruel world, we sell the beauty but destroy the girl. Britney I’m sorry for your broken heart, we stood aside and watched you fall apart.” It is so amazing and humbling that from the “Ruins” of Adam, Bebo can encourage all to pray: “Let my ruins become the grounds to build upon. Let my ruins become the start. Let my ruins become the grounds to build it on from what’s left of my broken heart.” And even though many can feel as though God has forgotten them in the place of brokenness: like “the lonely, the ones who slip away, or the preacher who some how lost the faith;” the love He breathes into us in Never Saw You Coming” reminds us that: “you (God) are mine and I am yours.”

The Only Hope, A Million Raindrops, & Can’t Live Without You somehow sums up what Adam should have realized before the fall: “You are the only hope for me… Your thoughts let them fall like a million raindrops, every word from your lips like a file is kept…& You’re the love I cannot live without. I can’t live without you.” No matter where you are in life, in your place of brokenness, when you hear the lyrics of “Bebo Norman,” the whole conclusion of the matter is declared in the end: ““One Bright Hour” you will come for me, One Bright Hour you will set the captive free. One Bright Hour you will wipe the tears away from eyes that now can see.”

This entire album is filled with lyrics of heartfelt pleas. It was very difficult to pick a favorite, but I was able to narrow it down to three: “Britney, Ruins, & Never Saw You Coming.” And out of these three, the single song which moved me the most is Ruins: “Laying flat upon my back, I feel like I’m frozen. The single thing I fear the most simply feeling nothing at all. This is my freedom song; this is my helpless state, this is where I am saved.” Thanks Bebo for the reminder that: Freedom comes with the realization that we are helpless in and of ourselves.
